Stronger, More Powerful Swings Start With Your Body

By Selena Samuela, Peloton Instructor & Titleist Performance Institute Certified Coach

Falling in Love with the Game

I fell head over heels for golf in January 2020. As someone who has always been athletic, I’m used to picking up sports quickly—surfing, marathon running, you name it. But golf was different. No matter how strong or fit I was, I couldn’t simply muscle my way through a swing. It demanded patience, precision, and a deeper connection between body and movement.

That challenge hooked me. And as a fitness instructor, I began to notice parallels between what my golf coach was teaching me—sequencing, balance, power from the ground up—and the principles I’d spent years coaching on the mat and in the gym.

From Lightbulb Moment to Peloton Program

Your swing mechanics depend on what your body is capable of doing. That realisation pushed me to get certified by the Titleist Performance Institute and start designing programs for myself and my husband (a scratch golfer). We quickly saw results: improved mobility, more power, and fewer aches.

That inspired me to create Peloton’s Strength for Golfers program—the first sport-specific program Peloton has ever launched, designed for anyone who loves the game.

What the Program Offers

The program includes seven classes: strength sessions, core work, mobility drills, and even a 10-minute pre-round warm-up you can do right at the course. Each class is tailored to golf’s unique physical demands, with a focus on balance, stability, power, and one of the most overlooked elements of the swing: disassociation—the ability to rotate your upper body independently of your lower body and vice versa.

These sessions aren’t about teaching you swing mechanics. They’re about helping your body move better—increasing range of motion, building stability, and learning how to generate power from the ground up. When your body feels stronger and more mobile, you’ll naturally be able to do more with your swing.

Accessible Anytime, Anywhere

You don’t need hours in the gym to see results. With just a couple of focused sessions each week, you can build strength and resilience that translates directly onto the course. A proper warm-up before a round, even just five or ten minutes, can help prevent injuries and keep you swinging smoothly all season.

And the beauty of the Peloton App is that these classes are available anytime, anywhere - at home, on the road, or even at the course before you tee off.

Why Women Belong on the Course

Beyond the physical benefits, golf has given me something even more meaningful: community. When I first started, I was intimidated. Golf has historically been seen as a man’s sport, and it can feel overwhelming not knowing the rules or traditions. But I want women to know that we belong on the course.

Say yes to that invitation, take the leap, and trust that you’ll figure it out along the way. There’s nothing else like spending two to four hours outdoors, connecting with others in a way that feels rare in today’s world.

Selena’s Top 4 Tips for a Better Round:

1. Warm up before every round. Even 10 minutes makes a difference. If you’re pressed for time, spend half your pre-round routine moving your body and the other half hitting balls.

2. Strengthen your core. Many golf injuries, especially lower back pain, stem from weak core muscles. Build this up and your swing will feel more stable.

3. Prioritise balance. Single-leg movements and stability work help you stay grounded through your swing.

4. Don’t skip recovery. Stretching, hydration, and proper rest are as important as training.

Unlocking Your Potential

Whether you’re ‘golf curious,’ a weekend player, or chasing single digits, the stronger and more mobile your body is, the more potential you unlock in your game. I created Strength for Golfers to help make that possible - so you can step onto the course feeling prepared, powerful, and part of the community that makes golf so special.
